A Stroll Through the Railways

All of us have countless memories and stories from our time on trains, an enduring layer in our lives. Similar to this, Madras' railway has a rich history and a variety of stories that have influenced both its development and the development of the city.

Madras, which served as the epicentre of the early days of colonial conquest and rule, witnessed the introduction of this new mode of transport and travel, the various policies and minutes that dictated its direction, the Englishmen who tried to steer the narrative, and the several companies that were formed to have their share of the railway glory.

Come join us as we look at these histories and piece together the formation of the Railways and the development of some early Railway buildings in the city, the tangible and intangible significance of the Railways reflected in these spectacular edifices.

Note: This walk is being held in collaboration with the Southern Railway Chennai Division.
