Calling all voracious readers, bookmark collectors and type design enthusiasts!!
This #WorldBookDay, we are releasing a series of 5 bi-scriptual bookmarks to document the ’Sign of the Times’. Sign boards with hand-painted typography are found in older precincts of the city, overshadowed by their far inferior conventional counterparts. They are a design layer to be preserved, a subtle signature left behind by the type artist in rapidly changing Chennai. Our renditions endeavour to capture the colours, curves and character of each signage, be it in Tamil, English, or any other language. We hope they serve as a homage to the unknown artist and their creativity.
Be sure to purchase your bundle today! They will definitely be interesting gifts for those missing Madras, those wanting to celebrate Tamil type, or better yet, keep them for yourself; they can beautify the pages between your books.
We have included QR Code behind each bookmark, indicating the exact location they can be found today. Some are abandoned shop fronts, some remain bustling active businesses, but all are always under threat of demolition. Make sure to go see them in person and walk down those lanes to see similar designs.
